Freedland Russo: GM and Future Lawsuits
It seems like every time we turn on the news, open the paper or log in online, we see the story of another consumer being victimized by a large corporation. It seems even worse when those consumers who are “loyal” to their particular brand wind up being cheated by that same company. To us at the Law Offices of Freedland and Russo, this is the worst kind of fraud because it appears that the companies are playing with the trust and sentiments of their loyal customer base.
Let’s take the case of General Motors. GM was eager to get court approval for bankruptcy but at the same time, was fighting the issue of current and future product liability. Although the Government officials have sought to help GM clear many of the hurdles connected with bankruptcy – a number of state attorneys have not agreed with the reorganization. The fear? Consumers will lose protection whenever they face a product defect.
More than 300 people have come together and formed a group for the purposes of holding GM accountable. Many of them have previously filed suits against GM for product defects. The problem may be that even if they win the suits for injury and wrongful death claims, they will not be able to collect any major damages due to the reorganization! As consumer Justice Attorneys, this is the height of irresponsibility. While we understand the GM has fallen upon hard times, it doesn't mean that they should not be held responsible for their actions. Stop listening
This is just another case where consumers are suffering for no fault of their own. If you have been following the journey of the Law Offices of Freedland and Russo, you know that we have been involved in pharmaceutical litigation, personal injury litigation, medical malpractice litigation and have settled several whistleblower cases, the largest being against Eli Lilly. With our experience there's one thing that we know - the consumer should never automatically assume that a company that manufactures and sells a “trusted brand” has his/her best interest in mind. Our experience tells us they don’t. Often a little further study will reveal that there are a plethora of others who have also been victimized by a company they trusted. Once again, research and vigilance are the keys.
What will become of GM? Only time will tell. Keep checking in with us and we will continue to update you as further information becomes available. |
